We like to call Markus the best human jukebox and there’s little to none music history he doesn’t know. Working at different music labels like GHvC, or founding his own (Serve & Volley Records), might has left its mark on this. He plays the probably most rad 80’s sets under different aliases like DJ Cappuccino or DJ Copa Cabana and we’re crossing our fingers that he’ll release his very own Late Night Tales one day. Coming from Western Germany he makes us laugh everyday with the weirdest Ruhrpottslang.
On a more professional side, he takes thorough care of all the business stuff, questions the status quo and will always find ways to improve the Groovecat app.
We have many different aliases for Jakob like Happy Höflich, Pitch Boy or Feel Good Officer. Having his roots in the city of Hamburg, he grew up with the likes of Dynamite Deluxe and Kettcar and made „Digga“ and „Moin“ part of our corporate culture. After moving to Berlin he lost his heart to the electronic scene and, to quote Markus „always comes around the corner with the weirdest Russian bedroom producers“.
His studies in communications and experiences at different agencies from fashion over education to city planning or Brisbane’s infamous radio station 4ZZZ, provided him with a broad understanding of communication strategies that he uses to spread the word about our Groovecat.
Josh is our true Mannheim soul, our working class hero, our Drum n’ Bass and Jungle head. Down to earth, humble and confident like the probably most underrated city of Germany, Mannheim, he embodies our whole technical backbone. He’s this kind of guys who disillusions your „totally hot news“ as „yesterday’s news“ cause he has read it on Twitter before. We don’t know many that nerdy people who bring that much openness and comprehension for the outter-tech-world as Josh.
He’s our connecting dot between music and tech, between management and development, he’s our product manager, our Steve, our calm Mannheim dude. His favorite answer to the question if A or B is possible: it depends. Never say never…
Full Stack Developer
Laurin was the first ever team member joining Groovecat, leaving his safe and solid job for this wild bunch of rascals. Now he is our chief developer, our tech-mastermind, our back- and frontend engineer, our captain of the Nebukadnezar. Like Josh he represents the Mannheim DNA of our company and posts the edgiest Drum n Bass hymns on Groovecat. As he’s everything but a Monday morning person, his contributions in Mannheimerisch during our weekly kick-off Skype session remain scarce.
He’s doing the work of three developers and representing Gen Z in our team. If we had to name one thing we’ve learnt from Laurin is to be picky-precise in bug-bug-reporting and feature-requests (otherwise he gets after you).
After leaving both Vienna and her Bavarian home town behind, traveling the world eastwards and coming back from the west as half an Aussie, Carina has joined us in summer 2018, the summer even our grandparents consider as the most crazy one. With her free travel spirit, endless smiles and this positive attitude she was immediately part of the family. She teaches us not only lessons in how to swear in Bavarian (‚Sackerl Zement!‘) but also took the whole visual and outer appearance of Groovecat to the next level, being a rather visual type.
With her background in marketing, she takes care of all our communication channels and is also known as our CBO, which interpretation we leave up to the reader. Only two things will spoil her mood: coriander and the misuse of ellipsis (…).
Roman is this guy you see in About Blank’s DJ booth on Saturday dropping hefty 90’s rave bombs and would never in the world guess he’s teaching music information retrieval at TU Berlin on Wednesday. He made white trousers socially accepted at Groovecat and invented our lousy in-official backhander-bump. We were a bit concerned to sit him together with Carina on one table as he is a Franconian who have this weird clash with the rest of Bavaria and the other way around (no one in Germany understands that). But it’s totally peaceful, no border, no nation.
Now he’s the first ever Data Scientist of Groovecat and if you listen very closely you can hear the white noise coming from his headphones while he is digging deep in our data.
Shilpa is our newest team member, who at the same time brings the longest work experience. She supported various startups in India as an iOS and AI developer before making Mannheim her new home. As our mobile software developer, Shilpa is taking over the frontend and makes sure that all app features run smoothly.
Even though Mannheim is notoriously known as the “German Tuscany”, it’s listening to the music of Kishore Kumar while cooking that really warms her heart. Fair enough!
Graphic Communication Designer
Sujing is our creative powerhouse, our designer with an amazing Far Eastern drawing style and unique graphic skills. After studying Graphic Communications in Hangzhou (杭州) she packed her bags to deepen her skills at the Fachhochschule Potsdam and achieved a spot landing in our office.
Our (lunch) breaks are now enriched with Mandarin vocabulary lessons like 慢用 (Majo) = Bon Appetit aka „Take it slow!“. although we’re still on a poor learning curve of one word per month. At least Markus finally found somebody with a shared Anime passion to nerd out with.
